Physical Science Expectations

Mr. Frohwein

Course Objective:

Physical Science is the study of matter and energy which includes both physics and chemistry. It is intended to be a basic introduction to physics and chemistry.  It will provide a background for those that will take chemistry and physics, but it will also provide practical applications of physics and chemistry for all students in the class.  The topics discussed will include velocity, acceleration, force, momentum, scientific theory, atomic structure, atomic theory, chemical formulas, chemical equations, along with many other topics.

Grading Procedure:

Physical Science grades will be determined on a total point’s basis.  The total points you receive throughout the school year on all assignments will be divided by the total points possible for these assignments.  Your semester grade will be 45% first quarter grade, 45% second quarter grade, and 10% semester test grade with the second semester grade being calculated in a similar fashion.  All grades are rounded to the nearest whole number. The grading scale will be:

93-100%          A                     73-76%            C

90-92%            A-                    70-72%            C-

87-89%            B+                   67-69%            D+

83-86%            B                     63-67%            D

80-82%            B-                    60-62%            D-

77-79%            C+                   59-below         F

Attendance:

Students will be expected to follow attendance guidelines in the student handbook.  For physical science, students will be given two days for each day missed to complete assignments from excused absences.  Students with unexcused absences will be expected to have assignments completed on the day they return to school otherwise the assignment will receive a zero.

Academic Achievment (Summative Assessments):

Summative assessment are assessments taken after a student has learned the material.  These will take the form of tests, projects, and lab reports in Physical Science.  Projects will be graded with rubrics.  The students will have an opportunity for second chance testing if the student has completed all homework assignments and does remediation work before the second chance test.  The second chance test will be a different version that the original test.

Academic Practice (Formative Assessments):

Formative assignments are assessments that are given during the learning process.  Students are still learning the material.  These assessments are typically daily homework type assignments.  These assignments are generally fewer total points than summative assessments.

Latework:

Homework should be handed in on time.  However, zeroes will not be added to the grade book until the unit test is taken so students are allowed to turn in assignments until that time.  If students are interested in second chance testing opportunities they must hand in all late or missing assignments for a second chance test to be administered.  All late work must be turned in by one week before the end of the quarter in order to be considered for student grades.

Classroom Expectations:

1.      Students are expected to treat the instructor, classmates, and course materials with respect at all times.

2.      Students are expected to be on-time and complete assignments on-time.

3.      Students are expected to bring materials (planner, writing utensil, text, and notebook) to class everyday.  You will not be allowed to leave the room to get these items.

4.      Students are expected to listen and not talk when the instructor or a fellow student is addressing the class.

5.      Students are expected to put safety first at all times.

6.      Students are expected to use sign outs wisely and only when absolutely necessary, otherwise I will put a limit on the number of sign outs in my class.

7.   Students are expected to not bring food or drink into the classroom unless approved by the instructor ahead of time. All food items that are taken will be

thrown away and all drinks will be dumped down the sink.  No exceptions!!!

8.   Students are expected to use classroom appropriate language at all times.

Chemistry Expectations

Mr. Frohwein

Course Objective:

Chemistry will be a challenging course.  The chemistry curriculum will have a two-fold purpose.  It will prepare students for college chemistry courses.  It will also prepare students for chemistry applications in their everyday lives.  The course grading will consist of tests, quizzes, lab activities, daily assignments, projects, portfolios and white-boarding.  The chemistry curriculum will discuss the scientific method, chemical and physical properties, atomic structure, elements, periodic table, chemical bonding, chemical equations, chemical reactions, gas laws and many other chemistry related topics.

Grading Procedure:

Chemistry grades will be determined on a total point’s basis.  The total points you receive throughout the school year on all assignments will be divided by the total points possible for these assignments.  Your semester grade will be 45% first quarter grade, 45% second quarter grade, and 10% semester test grade.  Seniors will not be required to take the semester test the second semester, so their second semester grade will be 50% 3rd quarter and 50% fourth quarter. All grades are rounded to the nearest whole number. The grading scale will be:

93-100%          A                     73-76%            C

90-92%            A-                    70-72%            C-

87-89%            B+                   67-69%            D+

83-86%            B                     63-67%            D

80-82%            B-                    60-62%            D-
